Stacey Olson Empty Gas Tank

You're Too Wise to Be on Empty

November 29, 20243 min read

One day, my husband took the car that I usually drive, and when I used it the next day, the fuel gauge was on orange, almost empty.

I ended up late to my appointment because I had to stop and fill up. I called him and said, “We’re way too old and wise to be living on orange!”

Which got me thinking that we’re way too old (and wise) to be living on orange when it comes to our own fuel tanks.

Your energy is like a fuel tank.

People often wait until their tanks are empty to make a change or take a break or do something to care for themselves.

But it’s way more effective, and feels way better, to keep your tank on the fuller side.

Even in demanding or busier seasons, keeping your tank in the top half can make all the difference in how you feel, navigate challenges, and show up for others.

When you don't, it’s much easier to fall into more negative emotions and unhelpful reactions, feel your confidence dip, and let the overwhelm paralyze you.

There are things you can do each day to fill your tank—and drain it. To experience more joy or less. To feel less stressed out or even more stressed out.

To start, reflect on these questions:

  • What gives you joy and energy? What drains your energy (and mood)?

  • What does a full tank look like for you? What does half a tank look like? What does an empty tank look like?

  • How do you know when you’re at a half tank? Pay attention to the warning signals and refuel before you’re on the empty side!

Now, you might look at others and think, They seem to have a bigger tank than I do. Is something wrong with me?

We each have different energy levels and capacity. And sometimes it depends on the season of life we’re in—or even the week.

This past week, my husband and I had to make a tough personal decision on our priorities, and it was leaving me feeling stressed out and low on energy.

The old me would have run myself down. Instead, I've been even more mindful to take care of my energy, even though it means slowing down the pace a bit.

And granting myself some grace (which we can all use more of for ourselves!)

But no matter what's going on, we can we all look for ways to better manage our energy. To do more that fills us up and less of what drains us.

Ideally, you keep your tank on the fuller side. But if you’re on empty now? It’s time to honour what you need and take care of yourself. To make yourself a priority.

Because you're too wise to be on empty.

Give yourself permission to refuel in whatever way feels right for you!

I'm here cheering you on.
