Be Present Like Your Life Depends On It
Want to stop thinking about work all the time? Or overthinking every little decision? Or worrying constantly about what people think of you?
I remember a moment a few years ago when all I wanted was to stop thinking about work while watching my kids’ swimming lessons.
I was stressing about a big work presentation, worrying about what people think of me, and wishing I could . . .
JUST. BE. PRESENT.
I thought this was just the reality of being in a demanding position, with young kids and a busy life.
But the truth is that it’s not about how busy you are. Being present is a choice and comes with intention . . . and practice!
Only once I started practicing mindfulness and focusing my attention in the moment, did I realize just how NOT present I had been most of the time!
This can seem like a challenge in today's fast-paced world.
But being able to focus your attention in the moment, being mindful of your thoughts, and letting go of worries about what other people think or what might happen makes all the difference.
Because the present moment is where we truly live.
So the real power comes when you can learn to be present in ANY moment.
This helps you to calm your busy mind. Even when there are all the demands and stressors around you.
So that you can . . .
Focus on the task at hand and be less distracted.
Connect better with the people you are with.
Feel calmer and less overwhelmed in your day.
Notice if your thoughts are helping you or hindering you.
Step out of overthinking and be more decisive in the moment.
Clearly see the things that matter most.
Free up your mental energy.
Experience more joy and peace in the everyday small moments.
And stop thinking about work all the time!
"One of the simplest ways to stay balanced is to stay present in the moment" - Unknown
Here’s the best part: anyone can learn to be present and mindful. It's a game-changer when it comes to being balanced as a leader and in your life.
It takes very little energy and can have a pretty big impact.
So, how can you start practicing focusing your attention on the present moment? Here are three simple ways to start to build the muscle . . .
1. Notice and observe your thoughts in an open and non-judgmental way. Being more self-aware and noticing where your attention is key.
2. Practice focusing your attention fully on a routine daily activity or conversation. Every single day.
3. Meditation, whether it's a set time of day or in moments throughout your day. Focus your attention on your breath and being fully present.
Every single time you notice your mind drifting (which will happen) know that's a good thing because that is when you become present. This is when you can focus your attention in the moment.
Start paying attention to the present moment like your life depends on it. Because the present moment is all we really have!
